A to Z horses – Halting Holdups with Hot Shot

Hold it right there!

Hot Shot is on the job with the Madison Mounted Police, helping to train new police mounts for duty.

His papered name is “Baron’s Hot Pursuit,” but owner Edie Brogan fondly calls him “Hottie.”

And so he is! The handsome 1999 bay is an Arabian/Percheron/Warmblood cross.

“This breed-cross is known as the ‘Desert Norman,’” Brogan explained.

“A new registry has been recently formed in Canada. Hot Shot’s sire, Baron Von Black, is thought to be the most prolific sire of Desert Norman horses in the United States today.”

Both Hot Shot and his sire live at Hope Hill Farm, just outside of Madison, Wisconsin.

Standing 16 hands high and weighing in at approximately 1,400 pounds, Hot Shot is particularly suited as Brogan’s equine partner in her ongoing responsibilities as Unit Trainer for the Madison Mounted Police.

“He puts the ‘bomb’ in bomb-proof,” Brogan quipped. “[Hot Shot was] imprint-trained from birth with … police work in mind and trained with entirely natural horsemanship methods for the job, which he started … at three years old. I even took him to the shooting range with me as a yearling.”

Brogan and Hot Shot are technically retired as police officers, although they still participate in training and special events. The pair also works together to offer natural horsemanship training and lessons at their home farm.

“Hottie is my best friend!” Brogan exclaimed.

  1. Oh hi! We are facebook friends, I think through Jennifer Walker. This is the first A-Z Challenge blog I've come to where I knew the person already. (I got involved through Glynis Smy, but haven't hit her in the list yet.) Nice looking horse, nice blog. I'm trying to visit all the A-Z Challenge Blogs this month.
