Budweiser tweeting about for baby Clydesdale name ideas

A full week before Super Bowl Sunday, Budweiser galloped into the Twitter-sphere with a plea for names for the latest youngster in the giant beermaker’s herd of giant draft horses.

Here’s the picture Budweiser Tweeted on Sunday, January 27.

Can you hear the collective "oohs" and "ahs"?

That little tyke is certainly fetching, but he's gonna grow into a two-ton pavement-pounding machine. And he'll still be strikingly handsome, to be sure.

What should this guy be called?

Have you sent in a name for the new baby Budweiser Clydesdale?

I have. Here are some of my picks.

Heir Bud
Buddy Hawley
Colt 47 (C’mon, math fans. You can figure that one out.)
Bonny Clyde

Like any of these? Go ahead, and RT ‘em!

Got foal name suggestions of your own?

Just Tweet them with this hashtag: #clydesdales – and see if Budweiser picks up your ideas. Tag! You’re it!

A to Z horses – Stop and Salute Scarlett and Her Sidekicks

Scarlett
Scarlett is the newest member of the Madison Mounted Patrol Unit. The 17.1-hand Percheron/Friesian mare joined the Madison Police group in 2011. Ridden by Officer Casey Cherne and Officer Sarah McLaughlin, Scarlett is a 1,700-pound black beauty.

Her first owner donated her to the force after completing the mare’s initial show horse training. “Scarlett was deemed well-suited for police work,” McLaughlin explained. “Her great personality and willing attitude made her a good candidate.”

Coming seven this year, Scarlett will make her first public debut in uniform at the 2012 Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, Wisconsin, in mid-April.

Beau
The Madison Mounted Patrol Unit currently includes several special horse, such as:

Beau – a 2000 Missouri Fox Trotter

Bubba – a 2002 Percheron/Clydesdale gelding

Jack – a 2002 Percheron gelding

Luna – a 2005 Percheron mare

Luna
The Madison Mounted Patrol Unit assists the Madison Police with special events, gatherings, parades and other city highlights.

Mistletoe + Mares = Merry Christmas?

Mistletoe + Mares = Merry Christmas?

Don’t try this at home … but it sure is cute.

Check out this vintage Budweiser Clydesdales television spot, featuring a pair of doting draft horses in their Christmas-decked barn.
 .
 .

Homer and Kitty are absolutely adorable in this 2007 video, as they meet one another under the mistletoe on a wintry night.
 .
 .

Mistletoe is poisonous to horses.

Peppermint candy canes may be a favorite equine holiday treat, particularly when broken into bite-sized pieces (to prevent possible choking). So go ahead and give your favorite horse a minty candy delight this Christmas.

But hold the mistletoe.

Mistletoe is also toxic to cattle, dogs and many other animals.

This white-berried leathery-leaved plant is commonly known as “thief of the tree” (for its parasitic qualities). Perhaps ironically, mistletoe is part of the plant order known as SANTAlales. Even so, this poison plant has no place around ponies (or other equines).

So, although mistletoe may be the kissing plant at Christmastime, it can also be the kiss of death for horses and a host of other creatures.

2011 World Clydesdale Show is this weekend!

2011 World Clydesdale Show is this weekend!

Who's going to see the Clydesdales?

No matter what breed of horses you prefer, the ground-shaking pounding of those massive, prancing feathered hooves have to set your heart a-thumping.

Madison, Wisconsin, will echo with the sound of approximately 600 giant Clydesdale draft horses, gathering at the Alliant Energy Center for the 2011 World Clydesdale Show. Equestrians and their horses will compete in halter, hitch and saddle classes.

And the Clydesdales may not return to Madison for another four years.

Who's headed for Mad-town this weekend to see the great gentle giants in action?

Bud Clydes remember 9/11 ... and so do we.

Bud Clydes remember 9/11 ... and so do we.

Some things just merit repeating. Just ask the famous Budweiser Clydesdales.

 .
 .

Anheuser-Busch aired this television commercial, titled simply “Respect,” just once. Of course, the video link has been shared and re-shared online, becoming somewhat legendary.

The original Budweiser Clydesdales 9/11 tribute ad was shown on Sunday, February 3, 2002, during Super Bowl XXXVI. (The New England Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams 20-17 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.)

Now, as we mark the 10th anniversary of the tragic and terrifying terrorist attacks on the United States, which occurred on September 11, 2001, may we not forget to remember.

America Remembers ... September 11th

America Remembers ... September 11th

Last night, U.S. President Barack Obama announced that Al Qaeda  terrorist leader and arch nemesis Osama bin Laden had been slain in Pakistan, where he was apparently hiding out in a walled compound.

Almost 11 years ago, Al Qaeda operatives attacked the United States, killing many Americans and others in New York City's World Trade Center and in the American Pentagon outside Washington, DC.

America and our allies have hunted for Osama bin Laden ever since, to bring the fanatic to justice.

We will never forget.

Who remembers this astonishing equestrian tribute to America, featuring the Budweiser Clydesdales, which aired one year later?

Take a look.

America is strong, and we care about our own. May we continue to pray for our nation and particularly for those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001. May we intercede for those who bravely place their own lives in harm's way to serve our country.

Never say nay.

Hearing Heavy Horses

Hearing Heavy Horses

A friend wore a neat and nostalgic tee shirt (bearing this old Jethro Tull "Heavy Horses" album cover) to the barn yesterday - on a hot and muggy summer afternoon.

The thunder rumbled in the distance, as we watched a dark curtain of clouds coming in from the West. The young horses romped and ran in the far pasture, awaiting the wild weather to come.

Although most of the younger horses are half-Arabian sport horse, Quarabs (Quarter Horse/Arab crosses), half-Hackneys (Hackney/Arab crosses) and National Show Horses (Arab/Saddlebred crosses), their hoof beats added to the memory of this classic rock song.

What memories this evoked.

Do you love heavy horses? Have you ever ridden (or driven) a draft horse? What's your favorite heavy horse - the Belgian, the Clydesdale, the Percheron, the Shire or another?

Here's an oldie for heavy horse lovers. It's "Heavy Horses," by Jethro Tull.

Snowy Horse Fun

Snowy Horse Fun

Not to advertise the subject or plug a particular product here (as I have no affiliation with the brand), but I love the Budweiser Clydesdales.

In fact, I enjoyed meeting a few of these fine equines last summer at a county fair and a state fair and speaking with some of their grooms and handlers. This photo shows Yankee and Jake, two of the famous Budweiser Clydesdale horses.

The Budweiser Clydesdales are beautiful, grand creatures.

Here's one of my favorite Budweiser Clydesdale commercials. Perhaps my many snowy days in the pasture with young horses makes this one somehow familiar. You see, there are these couple of spunky colts . . . . well, you get my drift (as in snow drift).
