Mairzy Doats
(posted for the A to Z Challenge)
M is for Mairzy Doats.
This week, I’m packing for the Midwest Horse Fair (which also starts with M), and the process is keeping me rather busy. As a result, today’s post is a mere musical reminder that may mystify many.
Do you remember this old nonsense tune from the 1940s?
.
.
Is it nonsense? Read the lyrics, and make up your own mind.
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey
A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn't you?
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey
A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn't you?
If the words sound queer and funny to your ear,
A little bit jumbled and jivey.
Say, "Mares eat oats, and does eat oats,
and little lambs eat ivy."
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey
A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn't you?
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey
A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn't you?

(Words and music by Milton Drake, AI Hoffman and Jerry Livingston)
My mares really do eat oats. My geldings do too. How about yours?
