20 equestrian groups tapped to tack up for 2017 Rose Parade

A diverse roster of equestrian participants has been announced for the 128^th Rose Parade. The celebratory event is slated for Monday, January 2, 2017, as part of the festivities associated with the 103^rd Rose Bowl football game in Pasadena, California. 

The equine acts selected represent many breeds and disciplines. From drill teams to trick riders, from jousters to mounted military groups, and from driving drafts to sidesaddle equestriennes, the assortment brings plenty of sporty interest to the annual 5.5-mile procession down Colorado Boulevard.

Here’s the horsey line-up for this upcoming highlight.

2. Anheuser Busch Budweiser Clydesdales (St. Louis, Missouri)
3. Backcountry Horsemen of California – Mid-Valley Unit (Sonora, CA)

Returning acts (from 2016) include the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Cavalry Detachment, Anheuser Busch Budweiser Clydesdales, Los Hermanos Bañuelos Charro Team, Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament, Scripps Miramar Ranch Saddlebreds, Spirit of the West Riders, New Buffalo Soldiers, Norco Cowgirls & Little Miss Norco Cowgirls Rodeo Drill Team, USMC Mounted Color Guard, Valley Hunt Club, and Wells Fargo.

Themed “Echoes of Success,” the 2017 Rose Parade will also feature the ever-popular floral floats and marching bands.

Take a peek at Depp & Hammer in ‘The Lone Ranger’

Heigh-ho, Silver! It’s Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in “The Lone Ranger”!

With the first week of filming finally wrapped, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has released the first photo from the much-anticipated remake of the television classic about the famous masked man and his savvy Native American sidekick.

“Tonto and The Lone Ranger ride again, Bruckheimer tweeted March 8^th (on Twitter.com). And the retweeters went wild, zipping the photo of the heavily made-up and feather-locked Depp and the buttoned-up and masked Hammer all over cyberspace.

The actual film, directed by Gore Verbinski, is due in cinemas nationwide in May 2013.

Princely Armie Hammer is Lone Ranger to Johnny Depp’s Tonto

Here’s the party-line of the plot-line for “The Lone Ranger” movie:

“The Lone Ranger” is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

Movie buffs are familiar with Depp from his popular role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Disney “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, as well as many turns in Tim Burton’s films. Hammer, who first found fame in “Gossip Girl” and “The Social Network,” has also appeared in "Mirror, Mirror" and “Flicka.”

The two are certainly a far cry from the original Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels, who saddled up in the original "Lone Ranger" series. Who's got a hankering to see the new film, when it gallops into movie theaters?

Great Ride, Davy Jones

Davy Jones died on Leap Year Day, apparently while seeing to his horses. The popular TV singer and TV personality was 66 years old when he died of a heart attack at his Florida horse farm. Here's the online story, with lots more information about Davy Jones and his equestrian pursuits:

He was a lifelong horse lover. As a child, the diminutive 1960s pop star wanted to grow up to be a racing jockey.

Remember Jim Nabors, who played the title role of Gomer Pyle on the 1960s black-and-white television comedy series? Actually, he got his start on The Andy Griffith Show.

Well, Jim Nabors was actually best known in his day as a singer. Just for fun, here’s his much-played version of “Jingle Bells,” a familiar song to horse lovers and others.

World Equestrian Games - Opening Ceremonies on NBC

With Tim Ryan, Robbie Boyce and Donna Brothers at the microphones, NBC Sports will air the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games on Sunday, September 26th.

Live from the Kentucky Horse Park, in Lexington, Kentucky, the coverage will begin at noon (EST), so set your videorecorders, cable television recorders, Tivos and more.

NBC Sports has scheduled 75 minutes (1.5 hours) for the opening ceremonies (and initial reining competitions).
