“J” is for . . . . Jumpin’ Jehosaphat!

Jehosaphat can jump; that’s true.

This gelding pilots us straight through.

We go off-road,

Aim for pay-load,

And Big J leaps into the blue.

Though Mom has never learned to jump,

Jehosaphat takes any bump.

They reach the rails;

He simply sails,

And pilots Mom without a thump.

"...He who began a good work in you

will carry it on to completion

until the day of Christ Jesus."

(Philippians 1:6)

Warning Signs and Traveling Whines –

Finding Grace Along the Way

The show invitation said “Nine.”

Departing at eight, we’d be fine.

Then, spotting the cones

And road closure zones,

We murmured to miss the deadline.

A repaving crew put us out,

While signaling us to reroute.

Though, drowsy, I drove

Past foliage-filled grove.

The trailer behind bounced about.

A slight indiscretion, wrong turn –

We rumbled along at slow burn,

With nothing to do

But bounce along through

And recheck the clock; live and learn.

So swindled were we and our freight.

The show fees we’d lose; none would wait.

And right from the gun,

We’d miss all the fun,

For we could not accelerate.

Still, somehow, our joy we re-found,

With autumn arriving all ‘round.

We gave up the war

Not irked anymore,

And noticed Creation’s background.

An old covered plankway stretched west

Thus bridging the gap o’er a crest.

We drove ‘cross the bog,

As the sun lifted fog,

Observing the scenery with zest.

We pointed the rig from frontier,

Surprising a full herd of deer.

Like water, they poured;

They bounded and soared –

A vanishing sight souvenir.

And although we scratched from the show,

We made our way home in a glow,

Unloading our mounts

And pleased to announce

More fun than the whole rodeo.

Sometimes, a day at the stables just seems somehow charmed. These are the days of which horse people dream. Better than a championship horse show, these are the moments we cherish most.

This was such a day, filled with wonderful horsey happenings and firsts:

Try to imagine, in a single day . . .

5. Five horses standing politely for the farrier

4. Four horses working correctly and soundly

3. Three young horses leading politely into the barn

2. Two young horses loading uneventfully into a horse trailer for the first time

1. One young horse completing his first trail ride with confidence and pride

Four-Legged Favor

Occasionally, new frontiers

Astonish us, as grace appears.

Two colts with pluck

March into truck,

Displaying boldness without fears.

That afternoon, the racehorse shies,

As martingale slips o’er his eyes.

Out on the trail,

He starts to flail,

The stops, as we reorganize.

Such moments put us in our place,

As we experience pure grace.

Having just enjoyed my fourth (Count 'em!) ride on my young colt, I cannot help but smile. At the risk of sounding trite, I have to say that it seems like yesterday I was foal-watching in the middle of the night with our mare. Then he arrived.

I never thought the day would come when I would actually sit in the saddle, proudly piloting my youngster around a riding arena. But it did.

Now this charming chestnut boy is three, and he is fabulous. Better still, he adores me. (Trust me on that one.) Ever since he hit the ground, he has followed me around the farm, generally eager to please. It’s as if he always wanted to grow up to be a super saddle horse.

To be honest, we were not sure what to expect from a half-Arabian, half-Warmblood colt. This little sporthorse is actually 75% hot-blooded, and he carries the Puritano Westfalen line on his dam's side. Still, he is good-natured and fairly level-headed . . . most of the time.

Oddly, I didn’t start riding until I was an adult. As a child, I did not have aspirations of equestrian abilities. When I was younger, I wanted to grow up to be a novelist. (Of course, a junior high social studies teacher urged me to pursue a law practice, because I enjoyed debating exercises in class. Imagine that.)

If I were one of the Seven Dwarfs, I guess I would be Happy right now, although some seasonal allergies may confuse the issue, making me seem more like Sneezy. And those decongestants can make me seem to channel Dopey at moments. A few more sleepless nights with clogged sinuses, and Grumpy may raise his angry head around here too.

Technically, the plural form is dwarves, but who am I to argue with Disney?

Back to horses: tell us your stories:

Have you ever ridden a young horse for the first time?
Did you have a wild ride or a quiet one?
Are you still riding this horse?
